Existing waterway infrastructures and future needs

Inland waterway systems serve many functions of which fresh water supply, safety against flooding and inland waterway transport (IWT) are generally considered the most important. This chapter concerns the use of the waterways for IWT. Section 5.2 starts with a discussion on the main characteristics of various IWT systems around the world; Section 5.3 addresses the historical development and present state of the West European IWT network, that despite its long history of normalisation and canalisation is now confronted with several new challenges; Section 5.4 provides insights into a few trends that are relevant when developing or upgrading an IWT network; and Section 5.5 concludes with some policy recommendations for the development of future-proof IWT infrastructures.
