ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the study, which explores the perspectives of young Polish males, their parents and teachers in a city on the south coast of England. It explores the research process through a discussion of research methods design, an exploration of the researchers positionality with regards to nationality, gender, age and education, and a section considering how the participants might have benefited from the research. The chapter considers the main issues, relating to gaining access and informed consent, preserving anonymity of the participants and protecting their well-being. It discusses the endeavours and challenges of a recent study into the educational aspirations of Polish families and their ability to realise them. The chapter discusses the process of gaining access and the ethical issues that emerged during the research. The interviews focused primarily on pupils perceptions of the school, contacts with other students, their preparation for the GCSEs, and pupils views on the labour market opportunities available to them in Britain.
