ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the keyconcepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a collective insight into the wide-ranging tensions and dilemmas that can emerge when conducting research with young people, prisoners, ethnic minorities and extremists, among others. It provides important insights into issues of ethics, access and voice, positionality, and reflexivity as well as broadening theoretical and practical understanding of what is expected when conducting research with marginalised groups. Christensen highlights some of the challenges involved in interviewing marginalised people with dense life stories, and the way in which anthropologists can often deepen their understanding of the field through gathering contextual knowledge that can later be expanded upon in complex interviews. The book provides a fine-grain analysis of the issues that need to be considered when working with the hardest to reach, from both an inter-disciplinary and international perspective.
