ABSTRACT

It is worth noting that as academics there is a potential reciprocity between the apparent diffi culty of doing research and the intellectual value placed upon such diffi culty; few of us presumably preface our bids for research funding by noting our intention to interview easily accessible, generally well-understood groups of people. Counter-intuitively, however, we are faced by a wide body of research that has examined the lives of Gypsies. This might indicate it would be useful to step back and consider how it has been possible for this work to take place.
