ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the historical debate surrounding the construct-related validity of Assessment Centres (ACs). It also discusses some of the most prevalent methods available to investigating the internal structure of ACs. Most construct validity studies have tended to focus on the internal structure of ACs and have almost exclusively utilized post-exercise dimension ratings (PEDRs) as the unit of analysis. The multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) framework has been one of the most widely used methods to investigate the internal structure of AC ratings. According to the theory, MTMM results should demonstrate high convergent validity of dimensions across exercises and high discriminant validity between different dimensions within single exercises. construct-related validity of AC ratings using a mixed-model approach, Hoffman conceptualized an alternative MTMM model. The chapter concludes by highlighting a number of existing controversies, emergent questions, and general directions for future research.
