ABSTRACT

Developing leadership capacity within the different contexts of education has been highly focused on over the last few decades. Researchers have searched for the relationship between school leadership, school effectiveness and school improvement and for the impact of leadership on student achievements. There are many theories on the timeline of leadership development. The leadership theories which have gained most attention in educational leadership over the last ten years are: Transactional Leadership and Transformational Leadership, Participative Leadership and Distributive Leadership. Transformational Leadership is seen as a process that can change and transform people, and hence organisations, for the better. Transactional leadership is seen when there is a focus on the main task and the standards to be achieved. Participative Leadership enhances the opportunities that staff have to engage in the process of organisation decision making. Myers and briggs type indicator (MBTI) can be used as part of the learning process for leadership and individual personal reflection.
