chapter  4
Continuity and Disruption: The Experiences of Work and Employment across Three Generations of Steelworkers in Volta Redonda
Pages 15

This chapter analyzes the history of the relationship between the city of Volta Redonda and the Brazilian National Steel Company (CSN) and also draws a comparison between Volta Redonda and the city of Brasilia. Both cities have been sites for experimentation and implementation of state policies, projects of national development and the manifestation of national ideologies based in notions of work, family and society. Additionally, this chapter considers the consistencies and inconsistencies observed across three generations of CSN workers regarding significant events and changes in the dominant patterns of recruitment, training and administration within CSN. The presented reflections emerge from the systematization of ethnographic fieldwork data, as well as the bibliographic sources available.
