ABSTRACT

Australia is a highly urbanized nation. In recent decades, responding to the challenges of delivering, managing and renewing cities that must work economically, environmentally and socially has increasingly motivated and focused the contributions of Australian urban designers. Ideas about “the good city” and the process of city-making continue to evolve. This chapter considers urban design in Australia, how it has changed and contemporary views on sustainable urban design with case studies including Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne main streets and radical Brisbane brownfield renewal. It reflects future city challenges emerging from neuroscience and climate change and suggests the critical need for creativity, rigor and effective communication.
