ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ideas behind and the alliance for the creation of 100,000 climate jobs and green workplaces in Norway, as a case of one potential social tipping point. The current Norwegian oil and climate change hegemony has been to portray exports of oil and gas as part of the solution to global warming. Oil companies themselves have played a crucial part here, with fanciful new definitions of sustainability and resource efficiency, and a whole series of other opportunistic arguments. The demand to scale down Norwegian oil and gas production was one of the key election messages of the first Green MP ever to be elected to the Norwegian Parliament in 2013. This change in parliament, however, is best seen as resulting from the grassroots challenge against hegemony in Norway, in particular in the shape of the Climate Election Alliance 2013 and the initiative for climate jobs.
