ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different aspects of the massive open online courses (MOOC) phenomenon through the eyes of individual students. At the Hammersmith Tube Station in London later that same month in 2013, the crowd was also highly diverse. However, this time it seemed as though the majority of the students were taking part in MOOC courses to satisfy personal curiosity as well as for personal growth. While on-campus teaching assistants (TAs) were excellent in the face-to-face teaching environment, they did not feel as comfortable in MOOC environment as the community teaching assistants (CTAs) who were recruited from registered MOOC students and were strong participants in one of the sessions of the online course. The creation of MOOCs is almost like the plot of a science fiction movie where someone unearths a piece of technology from an advanced civilization and inadvertently activates device. Leading universities are even developing strategies around how to best use MOOCs to advance their rankings and brands.
