ABSTRACT

Not far from the minster town of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, Hockerton housing cooperative is the UK’s best-known early example of communal one planet living (if you don’t count the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales or Scotland’s Findhorn community). Five households have been forging a new way of living there for 15 years that is more sustainable than most in the sleepy next-door village of Hockerton. When I went to see them it was a lovely late summer’s day. All of the trees and bushes were laden with fruit.
