ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine the emergence of various media in Britain since 1850, and explore their impact on, and gendered relationship with, the category of the ‘family’. Following a broadly chronological structure, we discuss the intersections between mass media, gender and the family in two parts: print media (including newspapers and magazines) and broadcast media (including television and radio). These historical narratives are interwoven with scholarship relating to media, gender and the family, and we additionally discuss the range of debates that have animated this field.
