ABSTRACT

In 2011, Lynda Carter, the actress made famous by portraying Wonder Woman on television, was the Marshal to the Arizona Gay Pride Parade. The head of the Phoenix Pride organization admitted that, though she had been a longtime fan of Wonder Woman, she was unaware of the value of the icon to the gay community. One constituent said in an interview, ‘She lived this life as a dowdy secretary . . . but her inner self, who she really was, was this powerful Amazon princess. That spoke to me as a gay man when I was younger trying to hide who I really was’ (Ruelas 2011).
