In 1985 the authors of the chapter on this topic for the original Handbook for Achieving Sex Equity through Education concluded that data on the patterns of sex differences in mathematics participation and achievement were “inconsistent” (Stage, Kreinberg, Eccles, & Becker, 1985). In many ways, their conclusion still holds.
