Humanistic coaching

WithSimon Walters, Lynn Kidman

Children’s construction of organised sport is heavily dependent upon adult influences, with arguably the most significant influence coming from the coach (Lombardo, 1987). To become a humanistic or athlete-centred coach (as noted by Kidman and Lombardo (2010b), the terms are interchangeable), it would seem to be fundamentally important that we consider the needs of athletes themselves. In this chapter, we draw upon the perspectives of three emerging coaches, who reflect upon their experiences of implementing a humanistic approach in their coaching.
