Integrating and applying knowledge of sport science – ‘Pulling it all together’: A case study of British Cycling

WithGary Brickley

London 2012 showed that sport performance has been dramatically enhanced by scientific interventions. Looking forward to Rio in 2016, this chapter will use my substantial experience in British Cycling to underline how integrated approaches to coaching can be drawn together to aid athletes of all levels. I intend to reflect on the growth and professionalisation of coaching within British Cycling, drawing upon my own experience working within the sport. At key times throughout the chapter readers will be asked to pause and reflect on their own coaching, and to consider their own strengths and areas for development.
