10 Pages

This chapter provides an introduction to the book and outlines its main research question. Attention is first paid to the exclusion of microstates in the comparative politics literature, and existing studies that point to a statistical correlation between size and democracy. On this basis, the choice for a qualitative, comparative investigation of the effects of state size on political contestation and inclusiveness is motivated, and the scientific and societal relevance of this research puzzle is highlighted. At the end of the introduction, an outline of the book is presented.
