ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the key logical framework and characteristics of the innovation communities that promote collaborative innovation. Innovation Community (IC) is a community in which the members share common values and strategic objectives. IC's characteristic is the generation of new meaning from learning and innovation, the characteristic of a learning community working towards incremental innovation. Boundaries synchronization promotes collaborative innovation, and has two main elements: context synchronization, and synchronization of practice. By synchronizing business-related contexts between different small worlds, practitioners are able to dynamically and concurrently share knowledge about problems and issues with strategic goals and the achievement of strategy. In recent times, the proactive use of information and communications technology (ICT) has driven coordination and collaboration among practitioners in organizations beyond the businesses with which formal organizations are concerned. NTT DOCOMO engaged in locally distributed operations to respond to competitive environments and real-time management with ICT.
