chapter  5
Cool pavements to mitigate urban heat islands M AT SAN TA MOURIS
Pages 20

Urban heat islands deal with the development of higher ambient temperatures in the urban zones compared to the surrounding suburban and rural areas (Santamouris, 2001). The specific characteristics as well as the magnitude of the urban heat island is highly determined by the urban layout, the type of materials used in the urban fabric, the type and characteristics of the pavements, the quantity of the anthropogenic heat released, the structural and morphological properties of the cities, the synoptic weather and climate conditions, possible local meteorological factors, etc. (Oke et al., 1991). In parallel, it depends highly on the selection of the reference rural measuring station.
