ABSTRACT

This chapter determines the republics which are located in the parts of Volga Federal Okrug. The Republic of Bashkortostan is situated on the slopes of the Southern Urals. The Bashkirs were thought to have originated as a distinct ethnic group during the 16th century. In 2009 Bashkortostan was the third largest agricultural producer in the Russian Federation, with agricultural output valued at 103,833m. roubles. The Chuvash Republic is situated in the north-east of European Russia. Agriculture consists mainly of animal husbandry and of grain, potato and hop production. The Republic of Mordoviya is situated in the Eastern European Plain, in the Volga river basin. The principal crops in Mordoviya are grain, sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables. The Republic of Tatarstan is situated in the east of European Russia. In 2011 Tatarstan was the second largest agricultural producer in the Russian Federation, with an agricultural output worth 150,441m. roubles. The Udmurt Republic occupies part of the Upper Kama Highlands.
