Talk and teaching

ByMary Earl

This chapter focuses on what good pedagogic talk is. Teachers also need a 'meta' understanding of what talk is for in school classrooms. The chapter also focuses on an account of some aspects of dialogic teaching. It explores the importance and the nature of classroom talk. The chapter explains the contribution of classroom talk to effective teaching and learning. Learning by speaking and listening develops others. In religious education (RE) the foundation stone of producing good individual written work is being able to articulate and then comment thoughtfully on responses to ideas. Even before an activity is set up, a teacher is thinking about the purpose of talk in their classroom. This purpose is not just about behaviour management. It is about learning. Experienced teachers work really hard to improve their questioning techniques and to vary the ways they run discussions and debates in RS because they believe that 'interthinking' ideas with others improves their pupils' capacity to learn.
