ABSTRACT
This chapter explores some of the strategies to improve teaching and learning. One of the issues that needs to be addressed is the difference between religious education (RE) and religious studies, which may mean that pupils should consider issues in two distinct ways. GCSE provides opportunities for assessment for learning, but equally assessment for learning is important for all pupils at all levels. At GCSE-level access to examination questions and mark schemes from past papers (available online) means that a range of questions and the criteria by which examiners assess answers is available. RE really is the subject that can be described, to use the Douglas Adams's phrase, as that which opens the door to 'life, the universe and everything'. The chapter introduces some of the key ideas, skills, approaches and content that should contribute to effective teaching and learning at Key Stage 4, but of course 'practice makes perfect', for like pupils we all learn from experience.
