ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the digital media literacies, drawing on the media education tradition to argue that this lower barrier to participation provides the opportunity for children to begin to learn about the digital cultures in which they live. It draws on approaches to media education that recognise the need for children and young people to participate in both creative media production and critical discussion for the development of media literacies. The chapter also provides general observations of children's media production with the iPads and then discusses two examples of children's media production. The first example of student production to explore using the building blocks model of digital media literacy is students' use of the app Draw and Tell to communicate their plans for improving the Outer North Centre's playground. The second example of media production to explore using the building blocks model of digital media literacy is an iPad photography project that took place at the South Side Centre.
