ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the flexibility across Europe, including both that which is designed to assist organizations and that which supports employees. It provides an introduction to the different forms of flexible working practices and the reasons for their use. The chapter also examines the different approaches to flexible working used across European countries. It explores the changes in both business and social environments, which have shaped the way in which organizations operate and the way in which individuals interact with work. The chapter discusses Europe-wide policy and the role of governments in fostering and regulating the different forms of flexibility. A number of economic and social changes have taken place in Europe in recent years, which have stimulated greater interest in flexibility, both on the part of the employer and the employee. Workplace flexibility occupies a central position on the EU agenda, however member states have responded in different ways to the implementation of greater flexibility.
