To work in and with local communities in regional, rural or remote areas can be among the most challenging and rewarding of research activities. A challenge for outsiders can sometimes be gaining the trust of individuals or the community as a whole. This can especially be in cases where previous ‘experts’ have not kept faith with those from the community and have not treated the knowledge gained or the knowledge holders with suffi cient respect. A profound reward, however, is that once trust is established rich and useful insights may be gained into other ways of knowing, thinking and being.
