ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the detailed system level modeling of different key components of compressed air energy storage (CAES) based gas turbine plants. The accuracy of the simulation is ensured by incorporating sufficient details into the zero-dimensional models like the use of heat transfer model in cavern simulation, the use of temperature dependent thermodynamic properties for compressor and turbine simulations, detailed chemical kinetic modeling of combustor system etc. The heat transfer coefficients are determined based on validations with in-situ cavern experiments. Huntorf CAES plant is taken as a case study to validate the performance of system level model with the experimental data reported in the literature.
