ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a detailed derivation of the governing field equations of CO2 sequestration in geological formations. It addresses the physical components and mathematical formulations essential for modeling CO2 geo-sequestration, including solid deformation, advection, buoyancy, mutual dissolution, diffusion, capillary effect, relative permeability, and heat flow. A complete set of balance equations for conservation of mass, momentum, and energy with different level of complexity are derived in a generic form. Appropriate constitutive laws, including equations of state, dissolution models, and mechanical and thermodynamic properties of water and CO2 are formulated and incorporated into the balance equations. The governing equations are presented in tabular and flowchart formats, making them tractable and suitable for numerical discretization.
