ABSTRACT

The author describes the impact of illness on her own intimate relationship, and discusses ways these personal experiences have influenced her psychotherapy practice with couples and individuals in the area of psychosocial oncology. Standard psychological classifications are overlaid on top of her personal narrative in order to highlight the differences between nomothetic and idiographic modes of description and representation, and to demonstrate the inherent limitations of the former in clinical practice.
