Pragmatic Principles in Coreference
ByCarlota S. Smith
Pages 20

To understand the making of coreference, we must consider the principles that speakers follow in choosing among the relevant forms and interpretations of a language. The principles are complementary to those of the grammar. Principle B of the Binding Theory deals with the grammatical factors that block coreference (Chomsky, 1981), but not with coreference itself. I present some pragmatic principles of coreference and discuss their realization in Mandarin Chinese.
