ABSTRACT

What is perhaps most impressive about the Spindlers’ work is that it addresses key and enduring problems in various branches of anthropology. In addition to their own basic research and publication, the Spindlers’ contributions to the making of American anthropology include their monumental editorial work at the American Anthropologist. The Spindlers’ career spans over 40 of some of the most interesting and productive years in the making of modern American anthropology. This chapter focuses on the Spindlers’ approach to the study of culture, particularly American culture, with special reference to their theory of “dialogue” and its transmission in formal school settings. It also briefly considers the influence of the Spindlers’ project on the work of other key figures in this field included in some of their most recent edited volumes.
