How do we move beyond the pattern of urban sprawl that has become so dominant in North and South America? I’ve suggested in this book that, while we’ve been busy searching for urban design alternatives to the U.S. suburban prototype, sprawl has diff used beyond our southern borders and is now shaping urban peripheries across the Americas, from Mexico to Brazil. Meanwhile, despite the best attempts to alter urban development over the last decade and a half, America continues to remain a “suburban nation.”
