It has typically been defined as communication between unlike individuals, typically from different national cultures. Cross-cultural communication is studying the same phenomena in different cultures. Interethnic communication is the study of communication among and between ethnic groups. Interracial communication is the study of race, and communication between racial groups. International communication is the study of mass-mediated communication that takes place between individuals from two or more countries that are unlike. Intercultural communication, and the different sub-disciplines, evolved in different ways in different countries. Anxiety Uncertainty Management of Meaning (AUMM) has been studied in relation to different aspects of intercultural communication. In conclusion, the anxiety/uncertainty management theory is a detailed theory that was developed and revised over many years. It remains an important theory in intercultural communication, and continues to be used as the foundation for research.
