ABSTRACT

This chapter explores small group communication or the study of how groups function and the various kinds of communication and roles/tasks people have in groups. Small-group communication is one of the central themes in the field of communication, and in this field many researchers are interested in group decision-making. It is the study of when three or more people come together to work interdependently to complete a task. All groups have goals or tasks to complete. A conjunctive task is when group members coordinate their efforts. So instead of working individually on individual tasks, members work together on all tasks to complete the overall task. Symbolic convergence theory (SCT) is the study of how groups come together to achieve a common understanding of shared communication within groups. An important part of SCT is that groups form and share fantasies, which act as integral parts in forming the group's collective identity.
