In recent years, scientific research on how the brain develops has provided convincing evidence that the early years are a critical time in an individual’s life. It is during these years that the brain develops at the fastest rate in our lifetimes, providing (or not) essential abilities that influence wide-ranging important skills, including, among others, our capacity to learn and analyse problems, speak multiple languages, develop musical ability, have better physical health, and effectively cope with stress and other emotions during adulthood (Shonkoff and Phillips 2000).
