Lifelong learning universities in the ageing society: empowering the elderly
Japan is the most rapidly ageing society in the world; currently, over 35 per cent of the population is aged 65 and over. Since baby boomers began to retire in 2007, there has been much public debate about how best to enable seniors to lead healthy and fulfilling lives, and governments have proposed various policy measures for this end. There is a growing expecta tion that lifelong education will play a significant role in it. This chapter focuses on one of the lifelong education projects, citizens’ universities for seniors, which has been well received in many communities.
