This essay will investigate the voice of German Protestantism1 in the public debate on bioethical issues. The most important “Protestant voice” belongs to the “Protestant Church in Germany” (EKD, the Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland).2 What are German Protestantism’s contribution to contemporary debates concerning the biomedical and medical ethics problems of our time, and what does that contribution tells us about how that church perceives her role within society?
