ABSTRACT

The various species of Aplysia (calif ornica, depilans, fasciata, juliana, limacina, rosea, etc.) are gastropod mollusks of the subclass Opisthobranchia. The full taxonomic classification of this genus is shown in Table 11.1. This animal is fairly common in tropic and subtropic waters and may grow to 8 inches or more in length. Figure 11.1a is a drawing of an intact speci men displaying the obvious reason for its common name, the sea hare: Two antennae-like structures, very much resembling a pair of rabbit ears, are common to all species of the class. Figure 11.1b shows the animal in a restraining device typical of one that might be used in an experimental study.
