On the Representations and Operations Involved in Spatial Transformations

Just and Carpenter further identify three stages in the comparison proc ess involved in the solution of the problem: initial search for comparable components in the two displays, transformation of one component into congruity with the corresponding component in the second display, and confirmation by checking the relationship of other display components. The traditional time-dependent effect of angular separation reported for rotation problems is attributed to the longer search times required at all three stages of this process when there is greater spatial displacements be tween the compared displays.
