ABSTRACT

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) results from exposure to trauma that is generally outside the range of usual human experience. It is characterized by symptoms such as recurrent and intrusive dreams and recollections of the traumatic event, a numbing of responsiveness to the external world as evidenced by feelings of detachment from others or constricted affect, and additional symptoms such as sleep disturbance, survivor guilt, and memory impairment or trouble concentrating (APA, 1980).
