Ques t ion : " D o you ever ask someone to score how they think their spouse or another person wou ld see them?" Yes, always there is an interpersonal aspect to the presenting compla in t : "She just a lways thinks I am trying to get back at he r . " "I do no t . " That's an example when I must. W e usually ask each family member involved in the compla int to score it the way they see each other. A n d then we compare the way the husband thinks of himself to the way his wife sees h im and v ice versa. A lot of times we show the family the results, especial ly if they are intelligent but unsophist icated in psychology. Engineering people or lawyers or accountants might be examples. It is really handy for them to go, " H o l y cats, psychology does have something behind i t . "
