ABSTRACT

First of a l l , it is very important to take frequent tangents from talking about the protagonist seeing himself or herself so that you tell the cl ient in the present tense to "see yoursel f . " You should hear yourself say, "See yoursel f " about 100 times dur ing the course of one of these metaphors. O n e way we manage that is by saying something l ike: "I had to tell her to ' look careful ly at yourself and notice how pleased you can be when you see that (whatever) reflected there on your face and in your posture' " ; or "She was having that exper ience that everyone has when you suddenly catch a gl impse of your face and can be surprised at the subsequent interaction you imag ine . " If you are in some relationship (therapeutic is best) with the protagonist so that you can logical ly be saying these things to h im or her, the " y o u " pronoun is very easily managed. O r , if not, s imply make full use of poet ic, therapeutic l icense to just switch verb tense and pronouns right in the midd le of your sentence.
