ABSTRACT

Stepfamilies are an increasingly common family form in American society. The latest census data provide a portrait of the growing number of stepfamilies. In the growing body of research on stepfamilies there are common themes regarding the stressful nature of the formation of a new stepfamily. There have been several important reviews of the research and clinical literature in regards to the issues and problems confronting these families. There are numerous issues regarding family dynamics including the issue of closeness, competition for time, and the variety and complexity of the various relationships within the family. Both children and parents must also confront their own expectations regarding what parents are and what they are supposed to do without embracing models of behavior that will not work in a stepfamily situation. Transitional adjustment issues and emotional responses to the stepfamily are covered by many of the programs.
