Over 230 years after the first white settlers arrived at the tip of Africa,gold was discovered on the high plains, nearly 1,000 kilometers inland from Cape Town. The year was 1886. The discovery led to the founding of Johannesburg, which, throughout most of its history, has since served as the center of the English capital in South Africa.
