ABSTRACT

Various types of commons have existed all over the world in all periods of time. These commons were created in local areas from the interaction between ecological and cultural conditions and played an essential role in sustaining the communities surrounding them. As in other countries, the rapid urbanization experienced in Japan from the 1960s involved the wholesale destruction of the social and environmental structure of the commons located on the fringes of existing cities. This chapter discusses how one such lost commons has been regenerated in Kakamigahara City in Nagoya metropolitan area. When and why did people start to notice the importance of the commons? What kind of planning process was invented for creating social consensus?
