ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the ideas for enriching religious education (RE) through music, art and creativity and through engaging pupils in the aesthetic dimension of religion. The sound of music features in the liturgies and prayer services of many world religions, in the recitation of chants and mantras, and in the singing of hymns, songs and prayers. The importance of exposing children and young people to a wide variety of music genres for the purpose of spiritual development is explored in the Religious Education CPD Handbook. For non-specialist teachers of music, taking a risk to include music in RE will result in more creative and imaginative approaches in teaching and learning, as well as fulfilling the general requirements of the National Framework to promote key skills through RE. Ninian Smart offered a framework for the study of religions identifying six dimensions which includes ritual, doctrinal, mythological, ethical, social, and experiential.
