Participatory approaches in research involving children
The chapter aims to discuss the role of participatory research in promoting children’s rights. Various methods and techniques used in participatory research are discussed, with an emphasis on their use within education settings. A detailed description of each method within the context of empirical research is outside the scope of this chapter, but references are made to the concept of participatory research, its origin, philosophical claims, ethics and critique, with an aim to help the reader understand the conceptual background behind any participatory work. The methods described here are mainly derived from the authors’ personal research work, with each work divided into different sections, discussing a method of enquiry and/or its use within an education and care setting.
