Despite a wealth of preclinical data on the acute and persistent effects of gut infl ammation on the innervation of the gut (reviewed in Vergnolle 2008), the role of chronic intestinal infl ammation on symptoms, comorbidities and brain responses in human patients with infl ammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) are poorly understood.
