ABSTRACT

This chapter contributes a greater understanding of the work of sex therapist through several discussions within the updated text that address this issue. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the therapist to the field of sex therapy and to introduce all therapists to a systems view of sex therapy. Whether it be the deficit in the clarity of the designation, or other factors, training exclusively in sex therapy does not lead one to a certification; yet people understand that licensure is the first step to become qualified to practice. It is accorded low status among researchers who fail to understand the rigors of doing sex research and therapy. It is the ultimate privileged position for us to share in their vulnerability and naked truth about their sexuality. Our clients invite us into the most intimate part of their life, and depending on how we respond; they may invite us to understand that part of themselves completely.
