Contextualizing the Demographic Imperative: Teacher Education for Students of Color in a Rural Community

This chapter is intended to be practical. It does not analyze demographics, history, or theory because these topics are covered elsewhere and in our own earlier writing. The US educational system had barriers to the employment of diverse teachers. Kitty Kelly Epstein also worked in the Partnership Program and has recently been part of Teach Tomorrow in Oakland, led by Rachelle Rogers-Ard. Epstein was recently awarded the Scholar-Activist Award by the Urban Affairs Association for her work in the area of teacher diversity, among other accomplishments in urban analysis and organizing. African Americans and Latinos generally do not have the money to work for a year for free. The US educational system has always had barriers to the employment of diverse teachers.
