Growing Your Own Teachers in Illinois: Promising Practice for Urban and Rural High-Need Schools

ByJeff Bartow, Maureen Gillette, Anne Hallett, Katelyn Johnson, Christina L. Madda, Imelda Salazar, Victor Manuel Valle

The Grow Your Own Teachers (GYO) initiative in Illinois, as state law with state funding, invests in low-income paraprofessionals, parents, and community leaders who want to be teachers but cannot afford college. Developed through an unusual partnership between community organizers and university teacher educators, GYO creates a pipeline of highly effective, community-based teachers of color for schools in low-income, high-need areas. GYO is an organizing solution to developing great teachers who look like and share the culture of students they will teach in their neighborhood’s low-income schools.
